Assess Your Substance Use with the CAGE Questionnaire | Project Purpose

A Tool for Assessing Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders

A Tool for Assessing Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders

If you’ve ever wondered whether your substance use—be it alcohol or drugs—might be problematic, the CAGE questionnaire can provide valuable insights. Originally developed to screen for alcohol use disorder, this brief and effective tool can also help identify potential issues with drug use. With just four simple questions, the CAGE questionnaire makes it easy to assess your habits and consider whether it’s time to seek help.

The CAGE Questionnaire

The CAGE acronym stands for the key phrases in each of the four questions:

  1. Cut down: Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking or drug use?

  2. Annoyed: Have people annoyed you by criticising your substance use?

  3. Guilty: Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking or drug use?

  4. Eye-opener: Have you ever had a drink or used drugs first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

Each question can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.”

Scoring the CAGE Questionnaire

To score the CAGE questionnaire:

  • 1 point for each “yes” answer

  • 0 points for each “no” answer

The total score will range from 0 to 4.

Interpreting Your Score

  • 0-1 Point: Low Risk
Advice: Your responses suggest that your substance use is likely within a safe range. However, it’s always wise to remain mindful of your habits. Regular self-assessment can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and ensure that you are not unintentionally overindulging.

  • 2 Points: Moderate Risk
Advice: This score indicates some concerns about your substance use habits. It may be beneficial to reflect on your reasons for using substances and the impact they have on your life. Consider reducing your intake or seeking advice from a healthcare professional. Engaging in activities that don’t involve substances can also help you create healthier habits.

  • 3-4 Points: High Risk
Advice: A score in this range suggests significant concerns regarding your substance use, indicating a possible substance use disorder. It’s crucial to seek help from a healthcare provider or counsellor specialising in addiction. Support groups, therapy, and treatment programmes can offer the assistance needed to make positive changes.

Taking the First Step Towards Recovery

The CAGE questionnaire is a straightforward and effective way to assess your habits regarding alcohol and drugs. While it is not a diagnostic tool, it can highlight potential issues that warrant further evaluation. Acknowledging a problem is the first step towards recovery. If you find yourself scoring in the moderate to high-risk categories, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Many resources are available to help you navigate this journey towards a healthier relationship with substances. Your well-being matters, and taking action today can lead to a brighter tomorrow.
